Today,
I visited
the house where Gandhi lived
In Mumbai.
I learned about his
travels
to London and Durban
and round the houses
and
back to Bombay (Making me think of my grandfather who travelled Riga to Glasgow then Ceylon and Australia around the same time; perhaps they were ship-mates?)
As it was then
and is now
Mumbai.
He was quite a character.
I was fascinated by his correspondence
with
Tolstoy
yes,
Count Leonid
of
War
&
Peace
fame.
And
his love
of challenging,
questioning,
opposing,
the cultural and social norms.
down to meeting the Royals
In his
Sandals.
beautiful.
A shame,
A little
That the place is worn-down,
Cracked plaster
And
Rusting
Wrought-iron.
But that,
whilst adding to the essence of the place
is consistent
with the city as a whole.
Hot,
Burnt
and
Honest.
It does seem sad that Ghandi’,s house is dilapidated but maybe fitting. Amazing and interesting that he corresponded with Tolstoy – in Hindi …… in Russian? In your Grandfather’,s time too – an adventuring traveller, brings it almost within living memory …….connections , Atmospheric impressions of people, an era and a city.
