My name,
Rod(ney)
Is an Anglicisation of
Reuben*
The first-born
Or Jacob’s sons.
He was supposedly
The guy
Who suggested
Selling Joseph into slavery
Rather
Than killing him,
His idea to daub the coat of many colours
With blood from a slaughtered lamb.
Exchange sacrifice.
It means,
Saw in my eyes,
For,
Supposedly,
the untold story
of family,
of rise and fall,
famine, redemption
and
slavery
was all told in Jacob’s eyes
before the story began.
It was, once upon a time.
#Call me Rod**.
*Traditionally in Jewish families living in the Diaspora, to help avoid progroms and the like, families would give their children local names – Daphne, Harris, George as well as Hebrew names, mostly used during ceremonies such as Bar or Bat Mitzvah, weddings and funerals. (Ironic really as I was the last born of my siblings…)
**See here for update from Chris last week.
And Biblical Reuben’s mother was Leah, the older sister of Rachel. And your mother, Sheila’s Hebrew name was also Leah. What goes around, right?
