Bells

She is a woman with bells on her bag.

When she walks

They jingle.

When she searches for a comb or brush or bus pass

They ring.

To defend from creepers

Who might make-off with her stuff,

When she isn’t looking;

Instead it is me who is alerted to her movement.

  1. I think these bells were also issued locally about 2years ago just before Christmas when there were warnings about thieves and pickpockets in the busy pre-festive season – who would pay any attention though ( apart from yourself )?
    We old ladies are vulnerable, advised to surrender the bag or whatever.
    This piece speaks quietly but eloquently of aging, poverty, fear, loneliness …….and the state of society.
